Scar The Journey Home Part Three
The News
It was late in the evening when they reached the border, a place that would have taken them two days if they did not have Snow and Raven. Yet they came to a small and quaint town and came to the most unassuming inn.
“One night, two rooms one of which is a family room along with dinner and breakfast.”
“Sorri, o’ly famili room available, m’ ‘fraid!” The innkeeper said before pressing a dirty handkerchief to his nose and sneezed.
“That’s alright. We will take it.”
“Oh, and you can come in one of our beds!”
“It’ll be like a sleepover!”
“Oh this is gonna be fun!”
“Yeah, we’ll have a pillow fight and-”
“Easy now. We’ve had a long day. Food first and then sleep.”
“And no pillow fights! We’re not here on holiday. We’re just staying for the night.”
“Spoil sport!”
“No fair!”
At this Morana groaned.
“Maybe one fight when we’re back home. But not tonight.”
“Promise?”
“Fi e!”
At this Scar looked away as her eyes lit up at the prospect of having a girly night. Yet suddenly she felt fear strike her as she realized that this would be the perfect night to put an end to her for good. Yet she also realized that if she did take up that offer then she would be able to do the same thing too.
“Would you like that?” Asked Morana.
Scar suddenly snapped out of it. She forced herself to relax as she looked back to see Morana’s eyes, eyes that she could sense were testing her. Yet she knew that she could not put anything at risk.
“Only if it’s safe.” She said, trying not to draw too much attention to what she meant.
“And what do you mean by that?”
“Bear, were you not listening? I told you that I’m dangerous to be around.”
“Oh.”
“Then why make friends with us in the first place?”
“You remind me of my adopted brother and sister.”
“They weren' Bill ‘n’ Bliss Cox, were they?” Asked the innkeeper before sneezing again.
At this Scar looked up and became suddenly alert.
“Yeah.”
“They ‘ad eyes like them two ‘n’ your mum do.”
“Not her mum.”
“They did?” Scar asked, suddenly worried.
“Yeah. King ‘n’ Queen now!”
At this Scar fought against a smile.
“They are? Tell me, they, they don’t look about twelve to thirteen do they?”
“Yeah ‘ow d’ ye know?”
At this she could not hide her proud smile.
“No reason!”
“Ya no’ Scar, are ya?”
“Yeah. Why?”
“So you’re the sister tha’ they keep going on abou’!”
That was when Beatrice and Britannia held their mother’s hand.
“Oh can we? Please!”
“What?”
“Be sisters!”
“Yeah mum! I mean she lives in that house all alone and everything!”
“Please! She’s got nobody since her mum was murdered.”
“She-she was what!”
“Yeah.”
“I think it was by those men that were after her a couple of months ago. They said that they wanted those two.”
“My adopted brother and sister.”
“Yeah!”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“You can afford it!”
“She can sleep in our room!”
“She will be good! I know she will!”
What is happening? Hold on. They must have had this conversation before! But-
No. Don’t do it. Don’t get your hopes up. You’ll never be part of that family. She won’t let me. Even if I did come from her womb.
“It’s not that. One of my employees, Cerf, has already done so.”
At this all went silent.
What! Who? The creep. The one that goes by the name The Watcher!
“And?”
“We are looking into what we can do. We just need to find Little Miss Cox’s real parents or to find the right home to finalize it all. So I’m sorry, but I can’t.”
“Oh.”
“Since when?”
“Since that case. I too noticed that you don’t have any parents so, as Cerf has been looking to have a child to look after, yet can’t seem to find the right woman. So I told him about you and he agreed to take you on.”
At this she looked gobsmacked.
“Thank you!”
“See. I do have a heart. Now, time to get some food and sleep.”
So they did. Yet, Scar still had her nightmares.
