Doormaze Drage The Orange World Part Nine
Last Survivors
Doormaze opened her eyes. She saw the ground beneath her. She was looking up as it was above her head.
That doesn’t make sense! She thought before going back to sleep.
✴️
When she woke up again she felt cold. Yet as her eyes dropped she saw a shadow. The next thing that she felt was her saliva in her mouth. Yet it tasted strange, almost fruity.
She looked up to see a small fire in front of her. Her eyes slid to the right. There she saw running and clear water. Her eyes widened as she quickly dived to it. Suddenly she felt like she had been stabbed.
“Aw!”
“Door-aw!”
Coalmine clutched her stomach.
“Woah-”
“Don’t get up quickly or-”
“Aw!”
Suddenly Burn clutched her stomach.
“You could’ve warned me!”
“I was going to!”
“Right. Now what?”
“We-”
“Are you three alright?” Asked a man with chalk green hair and baby blue eyes as he walked in.
“Oh, you’re not from here are you?”
“Sorry, no.”
“Who are you?”
“Stephen.”
“What’s your story?”
“Normal guy. Had a good wife, very strict, a bundle of kids. Yet when those fire things appeared I lost all apart from the last child of my wife.” He spoke as they only just noticed the baby in his arms.
Suddenly their hearts melted.
“Aww!”
“Girl or boy?”
“Girl.”
“Name?”
“Bessie.”
“How are you all alive?”
“Well there are several of us that are here. After the inferno was unleashed, all of us fled. I could only take her. None of us had any food so…some of us had to resort to cannibalism.”
“What’s ‘cannibalism’?”
“Don’t ask.”
“But-”
“Next!”
“Yet we were all depressed after that and most of the women beat themselves to death.”
“They did what!”
“On with it!”
“So we finally ended up here. The only fertile ground. So this is where we all stayed for over a year now.”
He turned up as his eyes narrowed.
“Waiting…Planning until we could find a man to defeat the fire king. The largest one.”
She nodded.
“By the way, why did our stomachs hurt when we got up?”
“Must have gotten up too fast.”
“Oh.”
“Yeah. You were close to death when I found you. So we had to shave an orange segment in your mouth.”
“Oh.”
“So you can stay here. We have fat fish and a good crop. So we have more then enough.”
She nodded.
“Thank you.”
He then cleared his throat.
“Anyway, I have to get this little one fed.”
“Context.”
“I’m going to give her some food. Can’t find the best milk here. The milking women are far too tired.”
She nodded.
“So what do we do?”
“Stay here, find out all their stories while we regain our strength.”
They both nodded.
So they walked out and split. Doormaze saw a woman with a baby at her breast.
“Hello.”
“You a milker?”
“No. I just want to know your story.”
She let out a sigh.
“We were all mothers ’til they all attacked so I ran as far as I could. I ran along with my baby and others had babies here that needed to be fed, so I did. After all, all the rest of my babies were all gone. So why not?”
She nodded.
“Are-”
No, she’s not.
“Will you be alright?”
“Don’t know. Still miss them but I could only take one.”
She nodded.
“What’s your name?”
“Jain. And this is Dillion.”
She nodded.
“Doormaze.”
So she moved on. She saw a man. He was the only old man.
“Hello. I’m Doormaze. Who are you?”
“Jakkaan. You’re not from this world, are you?”
She shook her head.
“What’s your story?”
“I am the only aged man here I am from a long line of keepers of a map. I was told by my father and him, by his father, that I am to tell you that once you deal with the threat that you are here to, return here and then it will be safe to give something to you that you will need.”
“Right.”
So she moved on.
That was strange.
