Valerie Valentine

Valerie Valentine was a princess of the age of sixteen and the oldest of five sisters. There was no other hair to the throne of her kingdom. Thus, she knew that one day she would become Queen when her father died. Yet she could not help but feel jealousy towards her sisters. After all her sisters would wed the princes that they loved and chose a thing that she could not. If she was to marry anyone, it would be someone who would benefit the kingdom. This would be regardless of what her heart wanted, which was love and romance. Yet as she knew that this longing would never be satisfied so she did all to ignore it.

One day her father called her to his side.

"Yes father?"

"Val, you know that I love you and I have thought long and hard and I have come to the conclusion that I do not want you to rule alone, for the burden of the crown is far too great and I wish for it not to crush you."

"I understand and I will do my best!"

"That is alright, for I have found the prince that I believe would benefit both you and the kingdom."

Yet when the day came for her to meet him, though he had perfect blond hair and deep dreamy blue eyes, when she prodded his mind it became all too clear to her that he was neither. Yet when she was in private she voiced her opinion to her father. Yet he stormed away and told her that he was right and that she was to wed the prince the next day without hearing another word.

Feeling trapped, she fled the kingdom that night. She traveled further and further away from her kingdom and the princes' yet she did not stop once. She did not stop even when she felt like her legs turned to jelly beneath her. Yet she soon came to a cliff though it was too late for her to stop herself. She fell and hit the waves beneath and washed up on a far away shore.

She woke up the following day as a strange man stood over her pumping her chest as she coughed up water. He looked at her with worry as he was soaking wet. He wrapped a strange robe around her. He had dark brown hair and eyes.

"Are you alright?" He asked,  his voice was clear and proper.

"D-do n-not know."

"Care to tell me your name, fair maiden?"

Valerie shook her empty head. She could not for the life of her remember a single thing! Not her father nor her mother or sisters. She did not even know that she was to wed that day! There was nothing but a black void in her head. She felt her heart quicken and she was choked by tears.

He smiled sweetly as he picked her up and took her to his kingdom where he was the king. He attended to her injuries himself and ensured that she was given a good room and helped her settle in there. There she slept and he would bring her her meals and would secretly cook them himself. He would also take her out and throughout the kingdom to help trigger her memory which was shrouded in darkness. This would always be in vain, yet it did not stop him from trying.

In the meantime he would teach her how to fight and strategies to ensure that she would not be able to be taken advantage of physically. He would also teach her how to write and read to ensure that she would not be taken advantage of politically. He taught her far beyond that of a normal woman of that time.

Yet many years passed and the two fell in love with each other and grew closer day by day. Yet it was only five years before they decided to be wed. Yet, it was soon after the wedding that her memories came flooding back. Including the fact that she was supposed to wed someone else. This she told her newly wed husband and they rode to their kingdom to return her to her family.

Yet as soon as she arrived she was told that her father thought that she was dead and had died a long time ago. Yet he never gave up the hope that she was still alive, yet when she asked if he was dead.

"No." The soldier said. "Though the poor man is on his deathbed."

At this they rode and fled to her fathers side. He was old and thin with all jolly and happiness had long since faded.

"Father I am-"

Before she could finish her sentence his eyes lit up and she embraced her. He wept upon her shoulder and squeezed her tightly. Yet all the life that had left him all those years ago was restored. She could feel his strength return too.

"Oh Val, I am so very sorry. I should have seen it first! If age has taught me one thing is that you were right. He was not the one for you. See when that prince became king, his kingdom quickly fell and I quivered at the thought that you could have been part of that! He was such a corrupt man that was easily blinded by gold." he wept.

Yet when she had helped him dry his tears he looked at the man next to her.

"Who is this?"

She smiled and took his hand.

"My husband." She said as she sat beside him. She soon explained all that she had been through.

He looked at her and smiled.

"I am glad that you have found a better choice and I approve of him. Though I wish that I was there."
