 Consequences


“So, you failed too?”

Coalmine looked down and nodded. He lip curled as she looked away both out of shame and anger. After all, he had let her go. He had let her live. She could not look up, she did not trust herself to look up at her.

“You too?”

Doormaze nodded.

“Why did you go in the first place?”

Coalmine narrowed as she felt her body curl up and she felt the pain in her wing.

Say it. Just say it.

No! She would never understand it.

Why not? Just say it. If she still does not understand, then that will be her problem, not mine!

No.

Give her a chance.

No!

She needs to know.

No!

“I don’t want to say.”

At this, Doormaze yanked her by the scruff of her neck and headbutted her.

“You better! After all, if we’re going to continue I’m gonna have to know who’s side you’re on! Have you got that, dear sister?”

“Why? Because you’re so special? Give me a break!” She snapped rolling her eyes as she thought of Rosy.

“Why should I? After all, I didn’t ask for this! I didn’t ask for anything!”

“Maybe that’s the problem! You’re so perfect! So good! So stupid!”

Doormaze punched her.

“No I’m not! I am not perfect! I am not even as good as you think! I mean I’ve killed! Is that what a good person does? And I am certainly not stupid!”

Before it would break out into a fight Mayer Millrose and Burn pulled the girls apart.

“Both of you! Stop it! You have to work together in order to defeat Dartru! If not then my town will continue to be torn apart and you will always fail in trying to defeat him!”

“Not until she explains why.”

“I told you! I don’t want to say!”

“Why not?”

“You wouldn’t understand!”

“MAKE ME!”

She huffed as she looked aside as she could feel tears about to be released in her eyes.

“Honestly, tell me, what on Earth could have they done to make you like this?” Doormaze cried, forcing her eyes shut as she just could not trust herself not to activate the Basilisk’s Eye and accidentally kill Coalmine before she got her answers.

She looked down as she bit her lip. That was when Doormaze kicked her.

“Talk to me!”

Coalmine glared at her.

Doormaze forced herself to calm down.

“I want to understand! If I don’t then, if there is a justifiable reason, that will be on my own head.”

Coalmine looked down and nodded as she spat blood out of her mouth.

“I was raised as a slave to those dragons. They were the closest thing to parents I have.”

“And that was their fault.”

Coalmine had to nod at that.

“Yet, it was nothing good. They would disrespect us, belittle us, and, if they felt like it, eat us. And this is the only way I can get respect and if I don’t…”

She heard Rosy’s screams. She saw her blood on her white hair, face and gown. She could feel the tears welling up. She forced herself to breathe slowly to stop them. She forced herself to calm down. 

“What? They’ll eat you too?”

She suddenly saw herself in that instead of Rosy. She took a closer look and spotted that it was not her that she was seeing in this image but Doormaze! She could see herself running over to her, begging them to stop that she would be good before moving onto Burn.

She nodded as her face became so pale that it appeared grey. She bit her lip, hoping to stop herself from releasing those tears.

Doormaze looked to the side, still bitter about the whole situation. Yet she knew that all of them did not have the time for this. No, they had bigger fish to fry at the moment. So she let it go.

“I think that we will talk about this later once your brother is taken care of.”

“And when will that be?”

“Tomorrow. We all need a bit of a rest and a good sleep. We will be able to think better after.”

“Then you can stay here. I have plenty of rooms and food.” She spoke bitterly.

“What is that?”

“My husband left me a while ago with our kids.”

“I’m sorry.”

She shrugged.

“It’s alright. It’s safer this way.”

“Why?”

“It keeps them safe.”

Coalmine narrowed her eyes as she nodded.
